This quilt pattern is super easy to make and uses only one Layer Cake for the throw or queen size which has an alternate layout. The baby quilt uses only 24 – 10″ Squares. This quilt pattern has a fresh, modern look and can be done up in any style fabric.

3. Purely Simple Quilt Pattern by Quilt Petaler
Purely Simple is a fun layer cake friendly pattern that combines a variation of the classic log cabin block pattern with the simple 4 patch block for a unique turn.
This quilt can be completed using only 4-6 fabrics or a wide variety. The quilt on the cover was made using one layer cake for the piecing of the blocks and additional yardage for the borders, binding and backing.

4. Five Slice Layer Cake Quilt Pattern by Yoan Sewing Studio
Here’s a modern free layer cake quilt pattern that I am so excited to share with you. This quilt is super fun and relatively easy to make, and will make an express quilt top. The finished measurements of this quilt are approx. 55 1/2″ x 64″, and for this quilt you will need a full set of layer cake.

5. Cozy Corners Free Layer Cake Quilt Pattern by Chicken Scratch NY
Cozy Corners is a quick and beginner-friendly quilt meant to make the most of a layer cake. This large throw finishes at 54 x 63 with no background fabric needed.
This is a great quilt for beginners but it’s also a really great gift quilt because it goes together so quickly. This is the largest quilt you can make from a single layer cake, other than just sewing the squares together and it’s a great cuddle quilt for watching movies or taking on a picnic.

Grab a layer cake and some background fabric and get sewing! This easy layer cake quilts make two different sizes: the large uses a layer cake plus background fabric and the small uses 1/2 a layer cake plus background fabric, or cut some squares from your favorite fabric in your stash.

10. Lattice Quilt Pattern by Amy Smart
The design of this Lattice Quilt is classic: patchwork on point with sashing and cornerstones. This pattern is perfect for 10″ x 10″ squares (aka 10″ Stackers or Layer Cakes). What’s so great about this classic pattern is that the white sashing give your eye just enough of a break that you can really throw in a lot of color or busy prints.
It works with any fabric collection – although I especially recommend it for collections with a variety of large-scale prints that need some space to be shownoff.

I want a pattern that keeps the layer cake squares intact to show off the fabrics and that comes together quickly. But I don’t want it to just be a way to use up a layer cake that I have sitting on my shelf. I want it to be fun!
This Rachel Quilt is a little twist on a traditional pattern and can be as modern or as traditional as I would like to make it. The pattern is quick and it really showcases the fabrics in my layer cake.

12. Snuggly Pre-Cut Layer Cake Quilt Pattern by Polka Dot Chair
This quilt pattern and tutorial sews up fast and makes use of 10″ pre-cut squares (or layer cakes). In my opinion, there are two types of quilts that are the simplest and easiest for beginners to sew. A simple patchwork quilt and a simple strips quilt.
This Layer Cake Lap quilt pattern is designed for such an occasion. It’s still simple to construct and beginner-friendly, but it adds a bit of piecing for a bit more detail and dimension.

13. Layer Cake Chevron Quilt Pattern by Patchwork Posse
This layer cake quilt is a chevron style. Using two fabrics the same size and making them into half square triangles, you end up with a whole lap sized quilt. The idea is that you match up one light or medium fabric with a dark fabric. You will need enough contrast in the colors to make this one work.
I am really looking for something that matches a lot and has a pattern. So, I’d pick one of the fabrics to be the same for all the blocks. We can play around with a few options and ideas!

This pattern uses a layer to create a scrappy balanced look. The main instructions are for a quilt top that measures a generous sized throw 65.5″ by 74.5″.
For this size, it requires 1 layer cake, 2/3 yard for binding, 1 yard for the border, and 4 yards for backing, and batting of your choice approximately 72″ x 80″.
